Wireless equipment maker LM Ericsson on Wednesday reported profits dropped 31 percent in the fourth quarter, citing restructuring charges and weaker handset sales, and said it would slash 5,000 jobs. Still, Ericsson said its core infrastructure business was not yet feeling the effects of the global economic downturn, and its better-than-expected report sent shares up more than 10 percent to 62 kronor in Stockholm.Net profit in the quarter fell to 3.9 billion kronor ($465 million) from 5.6 billion a year earlier. Kijk daar gaan de eerste medewerkers van mijn beroepsgroep. Google heeft in eerste instantie de vendors op het gebied van reruitment de wacht aangezegd. En nu krijgen ook de eigen recruiters de pink slip.

Oude tijden hereleven. Helaas. Het zat er enige tijd aan te komen maar Nortel zit wederom in de gevarenzone.
Nortel Networks Corp, North America’s biggest maker of telephone equipment, filed for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday, as the global economic downturn further erodes its once high-flying business. The filing came a day before the Toronto-based company was due to make an interest payment of about $107 million. Nortel and a number of its affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, according to a court filing. Its shares plunged more than 76 percent to 7.5 cents in electronic pre-market trading. Source

The Microsoft Blog in the Seattle Tech Report quotes Oppenheimer & Co. analyst Brad Reback as saying in a report that Wall Street would welcome layoffs at Microsoft and that layoffs would be seen as a “signal that profitability is more important than revenue growth during this very difficult time.” source

Langzaam aan komen de ontslagen ook terecht bij Nederlandse bedrijven. ING gaat nu in de US 750 banen schrappen. Op zich valt het nog mee want in de gehele US werken +/- 11000 mensen voor de ING. Wij zijn benieuwd wat de gevolgen op de Nederlandse arbeidsmarkt zijn binnen de muren van de ING
